A Guide To Essential Pool Maintenance

Many families dream of having an above-ground pool at their backyard. It brings together family members and allows them to spend quality time together. You want your swimming pool to last many years. Regular maintenance is key to keeping your pool safe and clean and all mechanical parts in good condition.

It is important to clean your pool regularly in order to keep it free from any contaminants that can cause irritation or sickness. If you have a routine and perform the important but small tasks, pool maintenance doesn't need to be difficult or time-consuming.

Why Is Pool Maintenance Important?

Pool maintenance is essential to keep your pool clean and free of any debris that could block the water filtration system. A good pool maintenance plan will make sure that everyone's water is safe. A regular pool cleaning schedule is essential for many reasons, including:

  • Make your poolscape attractive and safe. It is easy to keep your pool safe by cleaning out debris and removing any tripping hazards.

  • Safe water is clean water. Untreated or dirty water can quickly grow bacteria and other organisms, which can lead to health problems such as irritation of the skin (swimmers itch), eye, ear, and throat infections, and even upset stomach. This unwanted side effect can be prevented by regularly balancing the chemicals in the water.

  • Swimming pool mechanics will last longer and work better. The filtration system's components will last longer if they are cleaned regularly.

  • You can save money on repairs. Pools and other equipment that are well maintained will require less expensive repairs or replacements.

A good maintenance program will allow you to relax and enjoy your above-ground pool more, knowing that the water is safe and clean for you and your family. Ask your Ottawa pool installation company for tips on pool maintenance.

Pool Maintenance: The Three C's

It is possible to break down the requirements for pool maintenance into three areas, which are often referred to as "the three C's" of pool maintenance.

  • Circulation: Pool water must be circulated through a filter system to remove germs and chemicals and keep it clean. If your pool water becomes cloudy or dirty, it is likely that the pump or filter are not functioning properly.

  • Cleaning: Although your filters are great at catching any debris, they cannot do all of the cleaning. Cleaning the pool's surface and walls regularly will get rid of dirt and algae.

  • Chemicals are essential for pool maintenance. To prevent mold, algae, and bacterial growth, the pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer (chlorine), levels should be checked and adjusted each day.

Basic Pool Maintenance Tasks

That You Should Be Doing. These maintenance tasks are necessary to keep your pool clean and healthy.

Daily

  • Remove leaves and other debris from the surface. This will prevent debris from falling to bottom of pool, clogging filters.

  • To keep your water flowing, you should run your pump at least 8-12 hours per day - timers for automatic pumps are great for this purpose.

  • Use a test strip to test your water. If necessary, add chemicals to adjust the water. For most pools, chlorine levels should not exceed 1 to 3 ppm and pH levels between 7.8 and 7.8. Alkalinity levels should range between 80 and 120 mg.

Weekly

  • The pool water can collect algae, mould, and brush sediment from any decorative items, such as steps, ladders and slides, or walls.

  • To remove as much debris as possible from the bottom, use a pool vacuum. There are two types of pool vacuums: automatic and manual.

  • Remove all debris from skimmers, returns.

  • Make sure to check your filter. If the gauge is reading between 8-10psi and above, you should remove any visible debris.

Keep checking back regularly

  • Perform a chlorine shock treatment on a regular basis, especially after heavy swimming, high temperatures and heavy rains. To combat higher levels of contaminant, a shock treatment quickly raises chlorine levels.

More tips for keeping your pool safe and clean

These tips, while not part of a routine maintenance program, may make it easier to keep your pool clean.

  • Cover the pool with a cover if it isn't in use for more than a few days. This will keep debris from falling in and stop water evaporation.

  • Keep debris out of the pool by trimming trees and other plants.

  • Hire someone to take care of your pool maintenance if you don't have the time.

  • Make sure your pool area is safe. You should ensure that the pool area is well fenced and free from tripping hazards.

You can keep your pool safe and clean by maintaining it. This basic maintenance routine will help you keep your pool in top shape all year.
